function

解釋:

Function. This term, now much used in symbolic logic, was already employed by Descartes in his analytical geometry in 1637. It was much used by Leibniz, who introduced it into mathematics in 1694. In 1734 Euler employed the now standard notation f(x) for the function of the variable x. The concept of function introduces a number of factors such as variables, values or arguments of the variables, and the rules for assigning values to the variables. Derived from the Latin fungi (to perform or execute) it is used in modern logic to designate an expression involving one or more variable terms the meaning or truth of which is determined when the values of the variables are specified. In the philosophy of religion the term is used accordingly, e.g., one may talk of the function of aesthetic experience in religion or the function of ritual in the Eastern Orthodox Church contradistinguished from its function in Zen Buddhism.
